Frequently Asked Questions

Isn’t the Catholic Church against Gay Marriage? We do not represent a particular church. We are a group of Catholic individuals who share a common belief that legal marriage should not be denied based on sexual orientation. Just as a legal divorce would not be denied by the state because some churches do not believe in divorce and remarriage, legal marriage also should not be denied based on religious beliefs.

What if I believe that homosexuality is immoral? Do you think churches should be required to perform marriage ceremonies that would be against their belief systems? Absolutely not! We believe civil marriages are the business of the state and that churches are entitled to “sanctify” marriage, or not, according to their beliefs. This is not an issue of morality. It is an issue of legal equality. There are many churches that had marriage ceremonies for same sex couples during this past year, and many churches that did not. Marriage Equality did not and will not take away religious rights.

How can I get involved?  We have lots of choices for you!

  • If you are in the Sacramento area, attend one of our meetings.  Meeting information will be periodically posted on our website.
  • Send the link for this website, www.CatholicsForMarriageEquality.com, to family and friends.
  • Wear one of our buttons and/or display a bumper sticker.  Talk with people who comment on the statement.  (Check out our products page to purchase either).
  • Call or write your state and federal legislators about Marriage Equality.
  • Most importantly:  Talk with others about your views.  Request a meeting with your pastor and/or bishop to discuss the issue.  There are many people who oppose Marriage Equality, based on fear.  Help them put a human face on the issue.  Respectfully share your "family values".
